Cal State San Bernardino will be the site of the 23rd annual San Manuel Pow Wow, which will take place Friday through Sunday, Oct. 12-14, on the university’s athletic fields. Thousands of people from throughout North America come to the pow wow, which is free and open to the public, and features Native American culture, music, dance and cash prizes for those competing in the dance contest. The pow wow, which in the spirit of togetherness and affirmation of Native American culture, offers the finest singers, dancers and drummers from across the United States and Canada The event is hosted by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, and features non-competitive intertribal dancing and exhibitions, including bird singing and dancing, which is Native American music indigenous to Southern California and the Colorado River region. The event will also offer contest performers of all ages who will compete for more than $250,000 in cash prizes for dancing, drumming and singing contests. The pow wow begins Friday at 5 p.m. and runs to midnight, with the Grand Entry at 8 p.m. On Saturday the event runs from 11 a.m. to midnight, with Grand Entry for two dance sessions at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. The final day, Sunday, the pow wow runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Grand Entry at 1 p.m. The event will also feature non-competitive intertribal dancing and exhibitions. Visit the San Manuel Pow Wow event website for more information.
