CSUSB professor interviewed about U.S. Secretary of State’s Jan. 10 speech in Cairo Press TVJan. 11, 2019 David Yaghoubian, professor of history at the California State University, San Bernardino, was interviewed about Iran’s reaction to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech in Cairo, Egypt, on Jan. 10. Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter that “whenever/wherever US interferes, chaos, repression and resentment follow.” Zarif's tweet was a response to Pompeo’s claims that “when America retreats, chaos often follows.” Yaghoubian told Press TV on Friday that the U.S policy in the Middle East has brought about chaos and instability in that region through military occupation and the destruction of infrastructure during conflict. He referred to Michael Ledeen, a neoconservative who served as a consultant of National Security Advisor Robert C. McFarlane in the Reagan administration: “And I’m quoting, ‘Let’s turn the region into a caldron, and faster, please – faster please is the name of his blog. Turning [the Middle East] into a cauldron basically means creating such chaos and destabilization that no Middle Eastern nation on its own will have the potential to resist American and or Israeli power. “Through implementing a divide and rule strategy, the United States will be able to maintain its occupying forces and have a reason that it uses to legitimate this occupation,” Yaghoubian said. “Look at all the chaos going on around these poor American troops stationed so far from away home just to maintain stability. Actually the motivation and the implementation of the [U.S. Middle East] policy brings about chaos.” See the complete interview at “Wherever US interferes, chaos follows: Zarif responds to Pompeo.”
