What is a Graduate Degree?

A graduate degree is an advanced degree earned after receiving a bachelor’s (or baccalaureate) degree. Master's degrees and doctoral degrees are considered graduate degrees, as are some credentials and certificates.

Think of it this way: A bachelor’s degree lays a broad foundation of knowledge in a subject area, and a graduate degree builds on that foundation, often narrowing the focus while increasing the level of expertise. The decision to attend graduate school depends on your career goals as well as your desire to increase your knowledge in a particular field of study. If you want to be a psychologist, geologist, or school principal, you need a master’s or doctorate. Some careers do not require an advanced degree, but those who hold a master’s usually earn more money and advance more quickly.

Of course, money isn’t the only factor to consider. As you develop your expertise, you will find opportunities to make greater contributions to your community. You’ll find CSUSB graduate alumni among distinguished authors, local and state politicians, business leaders, performers, and community activists.
