"Pollution Revolution: Maoism, Environmentalism, and the Consequences of Industrialization in Modern China" with Dr. Brian Spivey
Zoom and in person, SB-210, and on Zoom https://csusb.zoom.us/j/388207496
Brian Spivey is a social and environmental historian of modern China. His book project is a history of the evolving ways people in China recognized, understood, and addressed the environmental and public health costs of industrial development from the 1950s through the 1980s. In this talk, he examines how Chinese leaders, scientists, and workers during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) forged a revolutionary socialist environmentalism that sought to eliminate the tension between industrial development and environmental degradation.
Dr. Spivey completed his doctorate in history at UC Irvine in 2023, and was a Mellon Faculty Fellow at UCI from 2023-2024. In 2025, he will begin a multiyear research postdoc at the Centre on China in the World at The Australian National University. Find more about Dr. Spivey at this link.
