The History of Patton State (Mental Hospital)
Anthony Ortega is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the Chief of Social Work Services at Department of State Hospitals-Patton, as well as the hospital’s Historian. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at UC Riverside in 1994 and went on to earn his Master of Social Work degree from CSUSB in 2000. Over the course of 2 years, Anthony worked with dozens of DSH-Patton staff and history students from CSUSB to build California’s first psychiatric museum. The museum opened in 2015 and is located on Patton grounds. He will discuss Patton’s history, the various treatments that have been used at the hospital, and the communal nature of patient life at the hospital then and now. (A tour of the museum may be available at a later date for interested attendees).
