Armed Forces Day 2018

On Saturday, May 20, the nation will be celebrating Armed Forces Day. In celebration, CSUSB’s Veterans Service Organization and the Veterans Success Center will host the annual Tie a Yellow Ribbon Campaign on May 15 (main campus) and May 17 (Palm Desert Campus). The Tie a Yellow Ribbon Campaign seeks student organizations, departments, faculty, and staff to sponsor a tree and decorate the tree with yellow ribbons. The application for sponsors will be made available in May 2018.

Armed Forces Day was created on August 31, 1949, to celebrate the service of military members across all branches rather than each branch separately (i.e., Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard). Ribbons have typically been used as a symbol to display our remembrance for those serving in distant areas of the world. Historically, women have shown their support for their loved ones by wearing ribbons in their hair. With the recent conflicts, yellow ribbons have emerged again to show support for military service members deployed in combat zones. In recognition of Armed Forces Day, the ribbons displayed on campus during the Tie a Yellow Ribbon Campaign remind us that soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen are deployed around the world and that we await their safe return.
