San Bernardino Campus

San Bernardino Campus: 1200pm Friday – 1000pm Sunday Pre-Trip Meeting: Tuesday, November 14th at 600pm. Location: TBD So, brain-eating amoeba anyone? Trip Category: Kayaking Trips

To paddle downstream the Black Canyon of the Colorado River is to enjoy life! It is the perfect kayaking adventure for beginner or seasoned paddler alike, for the lower Colorado River is moving flat water with no rapids – nothing but astoundingly tranquil, turquoise waters. But the gently flowing water often disguises the true gems of the Black Canyon. Behold the steaming pools of mineral water geysering from the deeply underground geothermal sources; the hot springs, altogether with the natural granite cliff walls of the Black Canyon, offer the kayakers one-of-a-kind experience seemingly dreamed up by desperate trip-bundle salesperson. In this trip, we will paddle between the towering cliffs and the looming walls of the Black Canyon as we navigate the once mighty Colorado River, now tamed by the zenith of dam engineering – the Hoover Dam, where we launch the kayaks.

Itinerary

Day 1: We will meet at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center at 12pm on Friday afternoon to pack up the van and make sure we all have the proper gear and attire for a successful trip. Our drive is roughly 240 miles (4-5 hours) with stops for lunch and whenever we have to fill up our van with gas. Upon arrival in Boulder City, NV, we will find a place to eat dinner before heading to our campsite at the Boulder Beach Campground. The rest of the night is left for relaxing around the fire and getting ready for a good night’s sleep.

Day 2: Saturday morning will be an early start, for we have to meet our outfitters at 9AM sharp. The morning will consist of packing up camp, having breakfast, and packing our camping gear into our dry bags and kayaks, ready to go into the water. The outfitters will drive us to the base of the Hoover Dam to launch the kayaks. Along the 4 miles to our riverside camp we will explore side canyons, natural hot springs, and the famous sauna cave.

Day 3: After spending the night on the riverside, we will wake up early for one last soak in the hot springs and pack the camp for an 8 mile, leisurely paddle-down towards our take out at Willow Beach. Once off the river, we will drive into the city to grab a bite and make our way back to CSUSB!
