HSIs: The Expectation and the Reality with Dr. Felipe de Ortego y Gasca

Dr. Felipe de Ortego y Gasca is a Scholar-in-Residence at Western New Mexico University, where he focuses on cultural studies, critical theory, and public policy. In 1970, he founded the Chicano Studies Program at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), the first in the state. He earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Texas Western College of UTEP, and a doctorate in English (British Renaissance Studies and Chicano Literatures) from the University of New Mexico, in 1971. 
Dr. Ortego is the founder of Chicano literary history, having written the first study in the field, Backgrounds of Mexican-American Literature, in 1971, opening the way for other scholars to expand the scope of Chicano literary history.
