Enjoy one of the greatest backpacking trips in the Eastern Sierras. After spending a night acclimatizing we will backpack along Big Pine Creek to the legendary Palisades, the longest spine of 13,000-14,000-foot peaks in the lower 48 states. We will travel 16 miles (3600’ elevation gain) over 3 days; exploring several of the alpine lakes and the largest glaciers in the Sierras. Be sure to have some good boots and full camera battery, you’ll need them.

Itinerary
Day 1: We will be meeting promptly at 8:00 am at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center to load up the van and set off on a journey Palisades. We will be driving about 4hrs. After a couple of stops for meals and gas only we arrive at our campground at the beautiful Big Pine Campground surrounded by plentiful trees. To rest and get used to the elevation.

Day 2: We will start of the day with some hearty breakfast. Then we will pack up camp, distribute the food and gear, and start heading off to the heart of Palisades. We will be hiking around 7 miles to get to our base camp for the night. Along the way we will be stopping by many alpine lakes. Once we make it to base camp we will set up camp, eat dinner, and head to sleep for more adventures tomorrow.

Day 3: Once we have had a good breakfast we will start the day off with a day hike up to the glacier via the glacier trial. Also if we have time we will explore both Summit Lake and Sixth Lake. After a long day of hiking we will head back to base camp, start up dinner, and relax under the stars.

Day 4: On our last day we will have one last breakfast in the back country. Then we will head out to be back at our van and start heading back to CSUSB stopping for dinner along the way.



Weather

Food
9 meals are included, starting with dinner on day 1 (3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners)
2 meals are not included (1 lunch and 1 dinner). Bring money. 

Hygiene and Comfort
We will be carrying our all our food, shelter, clothing, water and equipment in a pack weighting more than 40lbs. We will be staying in a reserved campsites on night 1. The first night campsites are within close proximity to vault toilets and there are NO showers. Nights 2 and 3 will be spent in the wilderenss. We will treat water from a nearby spring or bring enough water from CSUSB. We will dispose of human waste according to Leave No Trace practices. You will have the option to share a tent with one or two people or sleep out under the cover of the stars.  Light weight tents, warm synthetic sleeping bags, foam pads and ground tarps will be provided to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. The ground consists of soft and hard soil.
