The Lawrence's Goldfinch is a common breeding bird on campus from March through July, becoming uncommon to rare from August to October. They can be found reliably on the athletic fields where they nest in non-native pine trees. It is an uncommon and local breeding bird in southern California; it is rare and irregular during fall and winter.

Adult male Lawrence's Goldfinches are mostly gray with a striking black face, and yellow breast and wings. Adult females are gray with a yellow breast and some yellow in the wings. Juveniles are grayish brown with faint streaking on the breast and some yellow in the wings.
