The Merlin is a rare migrant and winter visitor on campus from November to February, with single records from March and April. It is a fairly uncommon migrant and winter visitor throughout southern California.

The male Merlin can be identified by its slaty blue crown and upperparts, white underparts with heavy brown streaking, and black tail with narrow white bands. Females are similar but have a brown crown and upperparts.
