The Nuttall's Woodpecker is an uncommon year-round, breeding resident on campus. It can be seen anywhere on campus, but is most easily found by listening for its distinctive call: a high-pitched, rattled 'prrrrrrrrrrt'. It is a common resident in southern California woodlands from the coast to the mountains.

The Nuttall's Woodpecker can be identified by its black and white plumage, with mostly white underparts and black upperparts with white barring. Males have a red patch on top of the head.
