The Northern Shoveler is a casual visitor to campus, with up to three seen in the flooded basins around Badger Hill 02-31 Jan 2012. It is a common winter visitor throughout southern California where it can be found on ponds, lakes, marshes, or any open body of water.The adult male Northern Shoveler has a green head with a large spatulate, black bill, white chest and flanks, rufous sides, and dark upperparts. Females are mottled brown overall with a large spatulate, mostly orange bill.
