The Acorn Woodpecker is a casual visitor to campus: individual birds were seen 17 Nov 2002, 05 Apr 2003, and 02 Aug 2015, and pairs were seen 31 Mar 2007 and 02 Apr 2014. The Acorn Woodpecker is a common year-round, breeding resident in southern California from the mountains to the coast wherever oak trees are found.The Acorn Woodpecker can be identified by its black upperparts, red crown, black and white face with white eye, black breast and white belly. In flight it shows distinctive white wing patches. The male has the red crown abutting the white forehead, while the female has a black area separating the red crown from the white forehead.
