The Black-and-white Warbler is a casual visitor to campus: a female was seen 16 Oct 2011 in the oak trees adjacent to Chaparral Hall. It is a rare migrant and wintering bird in southern California.The male Black-and-white Warbler has black upperparts with white streaks and white underparts with with black streaks, and black cheeks and throat. The female is similar but the black on the face and underparts is reduced or absent. These warblers forage by crawling along the trunks and branches of trees, much like ceepers or nuthatches.
