Robert Blackey Robert Blackey

History

History professor Robert Blackey made a little of his own last year by marking his 40th year teaching at Cal State San Bernardino. Though some came close, no past or present faculty member ever reached that mark. Blackey began teaching at CSUSB in 1968, specializing in English history; early modern European history; comparative revolutions, and the teaching and learning of history. He’s piled up some awards since then, including being one of only three CSUSB professors to receive one of the CSU system-wide Wang Family Awards given to outstanding faculty and administrators. He was an early winner of the campus’s outstanding professor award, and also has a distinguished service award from the university. In 2001, the American Historical Association, a 16,000-member national organization, honored Blackey with the Eugene Asher Award for Distinguished Teaching as the top history educator in the nation. He reinforces his teaching with authorship, generating publications both on historical topics and on fresh, creative approaches to the history lecture. Blackey, a resident of Claremont, earned his undergraduate degree in history at the City College of New York, and his master’s degree in history from New York University, where he also earned his doctorate.
