- Budget
President Karnig reviewed the latest information regarding the budget.
If everything occurs as projected, the System will be short an additional $22 M to
$72 M next year, which translates to about $1 M to $3 M at CSU since we are about 4% of System.
The Governor reduced CSU funding by $255 M for 09-10. The Governor will replace the $255 M with Federal Stimulus dollars, for 10-11 the Governor said that the state will replace the funds.
The budget assumes a 10% fee increase for 09-10.
The key issue is that a $50 M additional cut, which will be rescinded on or before April 1 if the State Treasurer and Department of Finance determine that California will get at least $10 B in stimulus funds by June 30, 2010.
The stimulus package ($787 B) for economic stabilization includes $54 B for education, $5 M for discretionary funding by the Secretary of Education, $200 M for capital outlay, and $48 B for education distributed to states based on population.
President Karnig emphasized that both resident and non-resident enrollments will be key contributors to the budget.
President Karnig will ask Bob Gardner to work with David DeMauro to establish a process to ask the university community for advice on where we can make cost reductions and to establish a group to examine the proposals that come forward to determine if they are sensible. President Karnig said a key element is having buildings metered in order to identify where there are inefficiencies.
