Administrative Council Minutes                                                     February 9, 2009

President Karnig introduced Bob Gardner, recently with NASA, who begins today as the Vice President for Administration and Planning.

 

 

  1. Informational Handouts:  President Karnig discussed the following:

 

A letter from Sylvia Panetta, Director of the Panetta Institute, dated January 30, calling for nominations for the Congressional Internship Program.  President Karnig requested that nominations be forwarded to him or Barbara by May 1.  He would also like to be notified if the deans do not have a nomination.

 

An article from the Los Angeles Times, dated February 5, entitled “California Seeks to Boost Transfer Rates to 4-year Universities.”  President Karnig commented that Jack Scott, a former Senator, is heading a task force to boost the number of community college students who transfer to the state’s four-year universities.  All three of the state’s public college systems will participate in the transfer task force.

 

The California State University Employee Update, dated February 4. 

 

An article from The Chronicle of Higher Education, dated February 9, entitled “Senators Cut Billions of Dollars for Colleges from their Stimulus Bill.”

 

  1. Policy on Student Participation in Policy Development

Dr. Rincon commented that the policy is a result of a request from the Chancellor and Trustees for campuses to develop a policy ensuring ASI students are involved in policy development.    

 

Comments/Discussion

 

It was recommended that the first sentence under policy be added to the purpose statement.

 

That the following bullet be changed to read, “All relevant campus committees, task forces and commissions shall include opportunities for reasonable student representation.

 

President Karnig requested that Dr. Rincon contact the Chancellor’s Office to obtain an understanding of what should be included in the policy and return a revised document for review at the February 16 meeting.

 

  1. Announcements

Dean Clark announced that the second Provost candidate will be on campus February 12 and 13.

 

Dean Caballero circulated flyers for two upcoming lectures:  February 10 at 2:00 p.m., Daniel McCarthy’s lecture is entitled “Who Created the Petroglyphs?” and on February 18, 6:30 p.m., Mark Landis’ lecture is entitled “The Tale of the Kite.”

 

Dean Yasuhara announced the Petrie exhibit has been extended for two additional weeks, and she reminded members of the webcast memorial service for Craig Monroe on Friday, February 13, 11:00 a.m. in PL 013.

 

Dr. McGowan Provided an enrollment update.  President Karnig requested that Dr. McGowan provide the following information:  for Fall 2008 1) how many completed applications, 2) incomplete applications and 3) how many admits.  And for this year, to date, how many 1) completed applications, 2) unprocessed applications, 3) incomplete applications, and 4) admits.

 

Ms. Hallack informed the members that she had a large supply of the “Access to Excellence” if anyone is interested in obtaining additional copies to notify her.

 

Mr. Kendle announced that ASI is holding a snow day on February 10, 11:00 to 1:00 in the area behind the Santos Manuel Student Union.
