General Information

The overall goal of our research is to better understand the physics of solid materials. Solid materials are at the very heart of civilization. Epochs in time are delineated by the important solid materials of that particular time. For example, the Stone age, the Iron Age, Bronze Age and the age of steel. One could very easily call our present time the silicon age because the computer technology was brought about by the semiconducting properties of solid materials like silicon. Currently we are on the cusp of a very exciting time in history. We are developing the technological ability to manipulate solid materials at the atomic level. This is coupled with our emerging ability to use fundamental physics to design solid materials from the atom up with desired properties, or combination of properties.
